Baby Dedication
During the 10:45 AM service on May 11th we will have a baby dedication service for parents with new gifts from God who want to publicly dedicate themselves to the task of bringing up their children in the Lord. Today is the last day to contact the church office to be part of the service (ksbc@ksbc.net).

Open House
You are invited to come celebrate the graduation of Beth Wilson from Purdue University, Saturday, May 10th, from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Wilson’s home (1329 W. 625 South, Lafayette; 538-2772).

Coming Up—Mark Your Calendars

June 30th-July 5th: HS week, Twin Lakes Camp

July 7th-12th: Junior Camp week, Twin Lakes Camp

New Gift from God
Omasanjuwa “Omasan” (“Oh-Mah-Son”) Kei was born April 28th to Klein and Reiko Ileleji. He weighed 8 lbs 10 oz, and was 21 inches long. In case you are wondering, Omasanjuwa is a Itsekiri name that means “The gift of children is better than wealth” and Kei is a Japanese name meaning “Grace.”

Graduation Open House
The Dittmar family invites you to come share in the celebration of Matthew Bryce Dittmar’s high school graduation, Saturday, May 17th, from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Dittmar’s home (3927 Glen Eagle’s Place, West Lafayette).

Haiti Mission Trip
Pray for those going to Haiti May 4th-10th, to work on two projects: Building a home for a widowed woman with four children; and Dr. Bennett will work in the dentist office. Here is a list of the people going on the trip: Purdue/KSBC: Kyle Adams, Marty Dittmar, Nate Mills, Corey Ramsey, Shane Summers, Chad Traxler and Angela Vinson. Oakbrook Community Church: Jeff Bennett, Doug Bray, Sarah Burke, Ryan Hoover, Gretchen Lee, Mark Malin.

Colorado Youth Mission Trip
Rather than each of the mission team members writing everyone in the church family a letter to raise support, we encourage you to prayerfully donate a gift towards this missions experience. You can designate your gift to an individual or to the team by indicating so on the offering envelope. Pick up a prayer card at the Welcome Desk to serve as a reminder to pray for these folks, and expect to hear how God has enlarged their hearts for Him through this trip.

5/19 7:00 PM

6/2 8:00 PM

6/9 9:00 PM

6/16 8:00 PM

Summer Institutes
During the summer our Adult Bible Fellowships take on a modified form called the Summer Institutes. These specially chosen classes allow for people to choose the topic (or teacher) that would benefit them the most in their Christian walk. This year classes will be offered every Sunday morning at 8:45 starting June 1 through August 10. This month, please sign up at the table in the foyer near the rest rooms for the Institute you wish to attend. This will allow us to determine class size for room placement purposes. To help you in choosing the class that is right for you, here is a list of what is being offered.

Intimacy with God through Prayer, taught by Wayne Muench - Do you feel that your prayer life lacks something? This class will be an eleven week Bible study on the subject of prayer that will start in Genesis 3. Let’s learn together to engage in an intimate conversation with God.

The Gospel of the Glory of Christ, taught by Tom Humphrey and Drew Humphrey - An extended exegetical study of the truths of 2 Cor. 4:3-6, where we will consider the magnificence of God’s glory and how it is revealed to the hearts of believers through the person and work of Jesus Christ. We will look at the biblical accounts of those who had a personal encounter with God’s glory, how the natural man is blinded to God’s glory, and how the crucifixion and resurrection are revelations of God’s glory.

Overcoming the Fear of Man, taught by Dave Nannery - Peer pressure, codependency, and low self-esteem are often seen as serious concerns in our culture. These stem from the fact that we fear other people rather than God. Come learn how the Bible teaches us to respond to these and a multitude of other problems relating to fear!

Marriage: Survive or Thrive? taught by Bill Davis - Why are you married? Have the cares and busyness of life obscured the point? Would you like to see your marriage go from “good” to great? Or maybe go from barely surviving to really thriving? For everyone from those who have a “good” marriage to the not-yet-but-maybe-someday married, this class will seek to challenge what you think marriage is and how that impacts real life.

Parenting: Raise Them to Release Them, taught by Pastor Tim Depue - What exactly is the role of the parent? Cheerleader? Teacher? Warden? Buddy? Coach? Are there any guarantees? One thing is for certain, raising children raises lots of questions. While there are no secret formulas, the Bible offers principles that can help parents as they work to prepare their child for the life God has for them. Whether your children are young, working through their teen years, or you want a head start as you plan for a family, join us as we look at God’s plan for parents.

As we come to the 40th chapter of the book of Isaiah, with the help of the Spirit of God, we, the people of God, will see ourselves clearly in the mirror of Scripture. For we, like the people of Israel have repeatedly “fallen off the wagon” so-to-speak….disobeyed God (in more clear biblical language) and have disgraced our Creator/Owner.

Dear Church Family,

As most of you know, we are adopting a baby boy from Ethiopia! Thanks to everyone for all your prayers and encouragement through this long process. God has shown himself in amazing ways since we first applied back in October and we’ve learned so much through it already. Our dossier (fancy name for gobs of paperwork detailing EVERY area of your life) was finished and sent off to Ethiopia in March. At this point, we just wait, wait some more, and then wait a little longer for that wonderful call telling us who our little boy will be! We expect to have our referral sometime in August or September. Once that happens, we’ll have a court date and travel to Ethiopia to pick him up and bring him home.

Everyone knows that the cost of international adoption is expensive. We jumped into this process with a mixture of fear and excitement, asking God to increase our faith as we trusted in Him to provide. We’ve clung to the fact that God is more passionate about the plight of orphans than we ever could be! We’re so grateful to God for the way he’s provided time and time again, always bringing in the money at just the right time when a bill was due. He’s used granting agencies, piano accompanying opportunities, and most of all, his generous people. Of the $25,000 that we need to cover the expenses, we only have $9,000 to go. The Lord is so good.

On Friday, May 30th, at 7:00 p.m., there’s going to be a benefit concert here at the church. The primary purpose of this event is to bring glory to God and raise awareness of adoption. If you’re interested in donating to help with the final costs of bringing our little one home, there will be some boxes in the back for you to do so. It will be a great night of music, worship and adoption stories, followed by some fellowship over dessert. We’ll have some wonderful musicians performing, including Joel Brovont, Jason and Jodi Bradshaw, Tyler and Whitney Daugherty, Micah Chibana, and Jim Lehe. Whether you donate or not, we’d love for you to come share in what God is doing around the globe through adoption.

Thanks again for all your prayers. We look forward to the day we can bring this child home and be part of such a loving church family. If you’d like any more information or simply want to read more about our adoption journey, check out our blog.

Love, Ben and Janet Whipple

Psalm 68:4-6a
Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol him who rides on the clouds – his name is the LORD
– and rejoice before him.
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.
God sets the lonely in families

2008 Summer Institutes are Coming!
With summer just around the corner, plans are being made to be sure to maximize the warmest season. Vacations will cause some to travel while the challenge of summer projects will captivate the attention of others. One thing that can be counted on is that everyone will find ways to enjoy the many activities that can’t happen any other time of the year. The same is true here at church.
Summer brings the opportunity to have our Adult Bible Fellowships take on a modified form called the Summer Institutes. These specially chosen classes allow for people to choose the topic (or teacher) that would benefit them the most in their Christian walk. This year classes will be offered every Sunday morning at 8:45 starting June 1st through August 10th. During the month of May you will have the opportunity to sign up for the class you want to attend. This will allow us to determine class size for room placement purposes. To help you in choosing the class that would be right for you, here is a list of what is being offered.

Save the Date: Summer Events to Note

Going, Going, Gone!
The Twin Lakes Camp scholarship program available from KSBC is coming to a close. You can pick up scholarship materials from your Sunday School teachers, and the deadline to complete the requirements is June 1st. Only one month to go! Contact Amber Magnuson (448-1620) with questions.
Also, don’t forget to register for camp! The dates KSBC will provide transportation are: High School Camp, June 30th-July 5th; Junior Camp, July 7th-12th; and Middle School Camp, July 28th-August 2nd. Register online at www.twinlakescamp.com.

Promotion Sunday!
June 1st is promotion Sunday. School age children will move to the class corresponding with the grade they will attend in the fall. Non-school age children’s classes are based on age. The age of your child by June 1st determines what class they belong to (2’s, 3’s, or 4’s & 5’s). If you have questions regarding where your child’s new class is located, please talk to a greeter at the Welcome Desk. For any other questions, please contact Pastor Depue at tedpue@ksbc.net or 448-1620.

Baby Dedication on May 11th
The psalmist proclaims “Children are a gift from the Lord” (Ps. 127:3) and here at KSBC we rejoice every time a child is added to one of our families. We also recognize that with the joy and smiles that children bring, there comes the responsibility to raise them in a way that teaches them about God and how to please Him. Because of this responsibility, parents often want to publicly dedicate themselves to the task of bringing up their children in the Lord. During the 10:45 AM service on May 11th we will have a Baby dedication service for parents with new gifts from God. To be part of the service, please contact the office (ksbc@ksbc.net or 448-1620) by Sunday, May 4th. We look forward to rejoicing with these families.

Trinity Mission Charity Event
The coed Volleyball/Ultimate Frisbee Tournament is an outreach event and charity to support Trinity Mission. This year the event is scheduled on June 21st, 2008. We expect 350 or more people: 14 ultimate teams (last year there were 162 people on 10 teams), and 20 volleyball teams. The highlights of the event are the straight-forward Gospel presentation and raising support for Trinity Mission.
There are a variety of ways for KSBC volunteers to serve:

Set up: Put up nets, lay out cones at the corners of the Frisbee fields, and set up sound system (7- 8:30 AM).

Team Check-in: 8:00 to 8:40 AM.

Water supply: we need teams of people available throughout the day to oversee the food table and to refill water.

Timers: for the ultimate games. Includes meeting with the coaches and setting up tournament brackets.

We will need a person to help Joel Brovont set up and use a generator during the noon hour.

Tear Down: 4:00 PM

Photographer

Someone to sort pictures and put them on the website.

Donations of fruit, water bottles, and Gatorade

If you are interested in helping out in any way, or want more information, please contact Allan Schinckel at aschink@purdue.edu.

Global Outreach Opportunities in Our Own Back Yard

Furniture Ministry Coordinator - SLCF International is looking for someone who would be interested in serving as the Furniture Ministry Coordinator. The person doing this would have the privilege of coordinating the pick up of furniture (as it becomes available) throughout the year to be given away at the August furniture giveaway. Having someone take over this important role in making contact with international students would free Paul and Dana to dedicate themselves entirely to other necessary aspects of the ministry. Please contact Paul (slcfworld@yahoo.com) or Dana (dgottfried@ebm.org) if you are interested in serving the Lord in this way.

One-On-One Bible Studies - Would you be willing to be trained to study the Bible one-on-one with an international student? SLCF International is looking for KSBC members who would be interested in meeting regularly with an international student to study the Bible one-on-one with them. Please contact Paul Briggs (slcfworld@yahoo.com) or Dana Gottfried (dgottfried@ebm.org) if you have questions or to express your interest in participating in this exciting opportunity.

Put Your Furniture to Good Use! - Your spring cleaning may have turned up some furniture at your house that isn’t being used or doesn’t quite fit your décor anymore. If you have good used (definition: if you would still use it yourself) furniture, consider giving it to a new international student. On August 16th we will be giving the furniture away to international students who will have just arrived in our country. In past years, the help we offer with furniture has really caught the attention of the new students for God’s glory. New students are especially in need of beds, kitchen tables and chairs, couches, and easy chairs. Please contact Dana Gottfried (dgottfried@ebm.org) or Paul Briggs (slcfworld@yahoo.com) if you have any such furniture that you would like to give away.

Verse 23 of our passage today records the question that prompts Jesus to issue some of his clearest and most passionate teaching calling for certainty of commitment. The question, ‘Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?’ is a self-righteous, smug, arrogant one expecting the reply that matches with the questioners beliefs. The Jews and their leaders believed that all Jews were saved with a few exceptions of the really bad ones. Jesus reflected the insincerity of the question in his response when he taught that many, perhaps most, will not make it into the kingdom, a concept contrary to the popular religious perspective of the day.
